The 24-year-old Dutchman won his maiden title with a dramatic overtake of championship rival Lewis Hamilton on the very last lap. The Red Bull Racing Honda driver went into the weekend level on points with Hamilton meaning this last Grand Prix was a winnertakes-all race. Verstappen started first on the grid but fell behind Hamilton early on. However, an excellent team strategy and the intervention of the safety car turned the race around and Verstappen took the win and the title.
